WHAT'S UP WITH ALL THOSE GOOFY HEADLINES?
As we've
attempted to make clear on numerous occasions, the headlines in our
regular feature, City Newsstand's HEADLINE WORLD, are made up by the guy
pictured above. They are not meant to be confused with fact.
But why do we do it? What is the reason for this feature?
After all, the headlines therein are patently false. We took the
time to ask the creator of City Newsstand's HEADLINE WORLD those and other
questions.
CN: What's the origin of City
Newsstand's HEADLINE WORLD?
MO: We used to do a feature called
the Top Ten Tabloid Headlines wherein we reprinted headlines from the
various tabloid newspapers. We singled out headlines that caught our
eye as being particularly clever, entertaining, or just downright
lurid. As time went on we realized that most of the better headlines
were from just one tabloid -- the Weekly World News. We made
an effort to make sure we included a few headlines from the Sun just
so it didn't become the Top Ten WWN Headlines.
CN: So why aren't you doing that anymore?
MO: Because they stopped publishing the Weekly World News.
For a while we facetiously reported sightings of eldritch copies of WWN
a la the WWN's own reportage after the death of Elvis
Presley. For those reports we were making up headlines. After
a while the joke got kind of stale so we created City Newsstand's HEADLINE
WORLD.
CN: You keep saying
"we". Who are you referring to when you say
"we"?
MO: Mike Oelrich.
CN: In other words, you.
MO: Yes.
CN: Why are you so hard on poor
Tom Cruise?
MO: We think he can take a joke.
CN: We?
MO: We. Me. You.
We're all the same person.
CN: So why are you interviewing yourself? Why not just
write this in the first person?
MO: I am writing in the first
person: It's you who is writing in the third person.
CN: LOL! You've got me
there!

NEW FAD SWEEPING THE NATION -- READING!
(excerpted from the Alabama
Free Gazette, an entirely fictitious publication)
Once America's
favorite form of entertainment, reading is making a comeback in a big
way. "I just got so sick of multitasking and having to have the
latest gadget," says Brian McHope, a junior at Pennsylvania's
Pendleton University. "I pick up a paperback and I'm off in
another world. It's linear and before I know it 4 hours are gone and
I've enjoyed myself immensely."
Heidi Lindt, an Akron, OH soccer mom, agrees.
"I used to hate all the reading I had to do in college but recently I
find that now that I'm doing it for myself and not because I have to I
simply LOVE picking up a magazine or a book and just shutting out the
world. It's just one thing, you know? It's not watching TV,
talking on the phone, making out a grocery list and watching that the food
on the stove doesn't boil over all at once. It's just one thing and
I cherish that."
Perhaps it's time that you found out what Brian,
Heidi and millions of others already know -- Reading is a wonderful
pastime!
