HEADLINES THAT ARE BETTER THAN THE
STORY
Tabloids have done
it forever, writing headlines that draw you into a story that wouldn't
even be in print if it didn't make such a great headline. It's a real
art. I'll give you a few examples.
"MY WIFE WAS BITTEN BY A BENGAL TIGER
ON OUR HONEYMOON!!"
This is a true story. It's not very
interesting, though. On their honeymoon a couple visited a zoo where
they had the opportunity to play with a couple of young tigers. One
of them bit the wife on her bare leg. It didn't even break the skin,
however, so while it's a great headline it's not much of a story.
"AN ALIEN TOOK MY BELLYBUTTON!"
This sounds totally wacko but it's 100%
true and about 99% boring. A man underwent surgery to repair an
umbilical hernia and the surgeon had to cut around his navel and remove it
altogether. The alien part? The surgeon was born outside the
U.S.
"MAN EATING ALLIGATOR AT LOCAL HOT DOG
JOINT!"
I personally am a man who's often eaten
alligator at my favorite hot dog joint. I've also eaten rattlesnake,
rabbit and kangaroo. They make great sausages.
In conclusion,
when you see a headline that seems just too wild to be true, whether it's
on a weekly tabloid, a magazine or even your own hometown newspaper, read
the story and you may find out that while it may be true it may not be as
wild as it sounds!
