In the store today I mentioned to a bunch of folks that today would have been Dashiell Hammett's 115th birthday.  Without exception, everyone I told said the same thing.
     "Who?"
I realize the guy's been dead for a good long while but I found this depressing nonetheless.  Hammett, the author of The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man among others, virtually invented the hard-boiled private-eye genre.  His detectives were not the highhanded eggheads that had been written about up until -- and considerably after -- his time.  They were working men.  Professionals.  Manhunters.  They were not brilliant and egotistical they were competent and wisecracking.  His stories weren't about 8 well-born rich people in a country house they were about bartenders and pickpockets, dreamers and schemers.  They were about people who lived in flophouses and drank cheap whiskey, people who gambled in backroom casinos and clobbered snoopy detectives on the back of the head when they got the chance.
It's a shame his books aren't taught in school.  There's nothing wrong with James Fennimore Cooper and Nathaniel Hawthorne but I'd like to see some high schools assign Red Harvest as required reading.
Oh well.  Happy Birthday Dash, wherever you are.
