CELEBRITY MAGAZINES THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN by Mike Oelrich With the recent launches of Rosie and O the Oprah Magazine, and the upcoming launch of Jordan, we got to thinking about the magazines that might have been, if publishers had come up with the concept of the celebrity magazine a little sooner . . . 007 the James Bond Magazine, might have come out in the mid-60s, featuring men’s fashion, expensive cars, international travel, cold war intrigue, and beautiful women. Frank, could have been the biggest launch of the 50s, giving its readers an entrée into Sinatra’s swingin’ world of jazz, entertainment, good booze, good food, gambling, and, of course, beautiful women. Dinah would have been the standard against which Martha Stewart Living would later be measured. Duke, with a monthly editorial by John Wayne and Louis L’Amour on board as a contributing editor, may have put True and Argosy out of business ten years sooner. Lucy would have been the ultimate under-the-dryer-at-the-beauty-shop read, full of celebrity gossip, and movie and television personality profiles. Ah well. I guess it’s no use being nostalgic for what never was. Still, I can’t help but feel just a little sad that there was never an F4 the Beatles Magazine. |
