Title: The New Yorker
Tagline: None, though one of their subscription offers uses, “Witty, Provocative, Intriguing”
Issue Reviewed: Oct. 31, 2011 | Volume LXXXVII, No. 34

Website: www.newyorker.com

The New Yorker is known for many things: Its reviews of theatre, film and literature, its insightful essays, its guide to New York cultural events and its humor pieces written by the likes of Steve Martin and Woody Allen but the one thing that really sets it apart is its cartoons. A New Yorker cartoon is unmistakably a New Yorker cartoon. The house style is hip and dryer than a martini, sometimes to the point of opacity. The current issue, pictured above, is the annual cartoon issue. My favorite cartoon in this issue depicts the Grim Reaper showing up at a front door at the same time as the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Prize Patrol. The Reader says, “Oh, well, this is going to be awkward.”

Exciting News About City Newsstand!

I know we’ve been promising exciting news about City Newsstand in this space for some weeks but while we still don’t have anything concrete to tell you in the terms of dates I can tell you this much: City Newsstand will be moving to 4024 N. Cicero, right next door to where we are currently. You may remember that there was a Toys ‘R’ Us Express in that same space last Christmas. There are two other things that I need to tell you about the move. One is that we’re still not sure when the move will be and the other is that before the end of the year we hope to be back at 4018 N. Cicero. Yes, we’re playing musical stores. If you haven’t already guessed it, we’re planning to do some serious remodeling at our store and while we do it we will remain open, but 50 feet North of where we are now, so as not to get in the way of the work. More info next week, I promise!

Title: The Strand Magazine
Tagline: Mysteries Interviews Articles Reviews
Issue Reviewed: Feb-May 2011
# Pages: 80
Price: $6.95
Frequency: Quarterly
Website: www.strandmag.com
Named after the London magazine that originally published Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, this American quarterly devotes itself to the promotion and preservation of fine mystery writing. The reason I’m featuring it this week, though, is because of the great coup managing editor Andrew Gulli scored for this issue: A previously unpublished suspense story by one of the giants of the mystery field, Dashiell Hammett. For the uninitiated, Hammett is the former Pinkerton agent who wrote The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man and almost single-handedly transformed the detective story with his snappy prose and focus on working class crime and detection. The story, “So I Shot Him”, features Hammett’s signature concise prose and mastery of tempo. This is a real event for lovers of classic mysteries, and it’s typical of the excellence that readers of The Strand have come to expect.

Tomorrow is Paczki Day!

Meteorological Spring is upon us and with it comes swimsuit issues, baseball annuals, St. Patrick’s Day and another Chicago favorite, Paczki Day! Everywhere else it’s called Mardi Gras and in Rio De Janeiro and New Orleans they celebrate it with orgies of booze and public nudity but here in Chicago we are Midwesterners through and through and we celebrate it by eating Polish jelly donuts. But what donuts! Dozens of fillings are widely available from the familiar raspberry and lemon custard to the more exotic plum butter and boozy custard, or just the traditional fresh strawberry, blueberry, apricot, etc. Depending on where you get them they can be the size of your fist or the size of a small child’s head. Some are topped with a glaze and others with powdered sugar. For many Catholics this is their last chance to splurge on sweets until the milk chocolate haze of Easter morning as the privations of lent start the next day with Ash Wednesday. Enjoy!

HOT DOGS AND HOT DOG!

This month’s Every Day with Rachel Ray very ambitiously attempts the impossible, i.e., to determine the best place in America to buy a hot dog. Of course, as America is the home of the hot dog it would follow that whatever wiener emporium they choose would also sell the de facto best hot dog in the world. They did the judging with a March Madness-style bracket set-up, with four brackets representing the North, South, West and East regions of the country. They nominated a lot of great red hot stands. Very wisely they included Hot Doug’s here in Chicago, my personal favorite and a place that would have to be in almost anybody’s top ten. Local institution Superdawg was also nominated but in the end the wiener winner was Gene’s & Jude’s out in River Grove. Eschewing the upscale fancier dogs their judges chose the simple elegance of G&J’s red hot. It’s nice to see a good old-fashioned well-made Chicago-style hot dog get some recognition.

Tonight on The Late Show with David Letterman the cover of the 2011 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition will be revealed and ten of the beautiful supermodels will participate in a special Top Ten. I can’t wait! The magazine officially comes out on Tuesday, February 15 so come on down and be the first on your block!

This magazine, along with a child’s handful of others, is all that’s left from the era of pulp fiction. EQMM is an institution and the gold standard for short crime fiction. Though its circulation is only a fraction of what it once was it’s still a great read for mystery lovers. The top writers in the field may be found in its pages, along with talented newcomers. In an era when very few magazines publish any fiction and most fiction magazines don’t publish at all any more, EQMM celebrates it by publishing almost nothing but short crime fiction. It also happens to be Johnny Chicago’s favorite magazine.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! — WEEK II

Last week in this space I promised a few changes. Believe it or not I actually managed to implement a few of them in time for this week’s entry. As you see I have posted a goofy new picture of your loyal webmaster. I’ve also changed the background color of the blog to a very pale powdery blue. The big thing this week, though, will be the introduction of a new feature which I hope will become a weekly fixture here, MAG OF THE WEEK. So, without further ado, here is the MAG OF THE WEEK:

MAG OF THE WEEK

Title: Twisted South
Tagline: Art · Music · Food · Literature · Sports · Photography. The Essential, Eccentric South.
Issue Reviewed: Winter 2011 Vol. 1 No. 2
# Pages: 128
Price: $6.99
Frequency: Quarterly
There are strange people everywhere. Everyone has a weird uncle or an eccentric neighbor. In the South, though, there’s so much strangeness it’s an intrinsic part of the regional culture. It’s that culture that Twisted South seeks to document. Just to get into the spirit of Southern strangeness, Twisted South has not one but two front covers. The idea is that you read to the middle, flip it over and start reading again at the second cover. Now that’s Twisted!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Can you believe that two years have passed since we started this blog? It’s changed a little bit over that time. The picture is different. The frequency is different. There are some new features. Mostly it’s the same, though. With the new year I think maybe it’s time to shake things up just a little. Spruce things up a bit. Change the picture again, maybe. More photos in general. A new feature or two. Watch this space next week and see if I’ve managed to implement any of these changes.
