In the store today I mentioned to a bunch of folks that today would have been Dashiell Hammett’s 115th birthday. Without exception, everyone I told said the same thing.
“Who?”
I realize the guy’s been dead for a good long while but I found this depressing nonetheless. Hammett, the author of The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man among others, virtually invented the hard-boiled private-eye genre. His detectives were not the highhanded eggheads that had been written about up until — and considerably after — his time. They were working men. Professionals. Manhunters. They were not brilliant and egotistical they were competent and wisecracking. His stories weren’t about 8 well-born rich people in a country house they were about bartenders and pickpockets, dreamers and schemers. They were about people who lived in flophouses and drank cheap whiskey, people who gambled in backroom casinos and clobbered snoopy detectives on the back of the head when they got the chance.
It’s a shame his books aren’t taught in school. There’s nothing wrong with James Fennimore Cooper and Nathaniel Hawthorne but I’d like to see some high schools assign Red Harvest as required reading.
Oh well. Happy Birthday Dash, wherever you are.

In the past we’ve told you about how various European magazines come bundled with merchandise over the years. Embroidery projects, decals, sewing patterns, temporary tattoos and free computer software are fairly commonplace. Some of the more unusual items we’ve seen attached to mags include hats, jewelry, zippered vinyl travel pouches and — my favorite — cans of pop that chill themselves when you open them. Well, issue #18 of National Airsoft Magazine comes with something we’ve never seen before — ammunition. Don’t worry, it’s just rubber pellets for airguns. Still, it’s different. As I’m writing this a customer has just brought up the 25th issue of Dice which has a bagged set of four crayons stapled to its cover.

A note on censorship…

I entered a contest at a blog this week to win a copy of “Hotel for Dogs” on DVD. To enter one had to post a comment explaining why one wanted to win. I wrote:

My wife and I foster rescued cocker spaniels so our house has sort of become a hotel for dogs.

The blog printed:

My wife and I foster rescued C**ker spaniels so our house has sort of become a hotel for dogs.

Here we have a case of censorship making something dirty out of something as wholesome as a family dog. I can’t help but wonder if this would have happened if we fostered wiener dogs…

For those of you not familiar with Mr. Schaden, he’s been the voice of Old Time Radio in Chicagoland for nearly forty years, hosting the program “Those Were The Days” on WLTD, WNIB and WDCB, featuring recordings from the Golden Age of Radio. He worked here at Six Corners for many years as well, at the old Northwest Federal Savings. He also edited a group of community newspapers here on the northwest side and is now Editor Emeritus of Nostalgia Digest. Enjoy your retirement Chuck! You deserve it!

Now in its 94th year, Who’s Who In Baseball is the bible of the MLB. Its arrival is a harbinger of spring training. This year it contains the lifetime records of more than 775 players plus photos. It appeared on our shelves on Monday.

I’m starting to scare myself. First I correctly predicted here that taking the points and the over would win you both bets on this year’s Super Bowl and just a few days ago I correctly predicted the winners in the top 8 Oscar categories that I posted here. I swear, folks, anything I know I read in magazines!

Many years ago I won an office Oscar pool with 17 of 21 correct. I haven’t done so well since, but I’ve been reading some of the newspapers and magazines in the store and this is what I’ve come up with for this year.

MY OSCAR PICKS

Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire
Best Actor: Sean Penn — If Mickey Rourke’s dog had died even a week earlier that might have put him over the top.
Best Actress: Kate Winslet — Here’s hoping she can accept it without turning on the waterworks.
Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger — He deserves it and everybody says it’s a lock — let’s hope they’re right!
Best Supporting Actress: Penelope Cruz — Hey! She’s hot.
Best Director: Danny Boyle
Best Song: Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire
Best Animated Feature: Wall·E — It might have gotten my vote for Best Picture if it had been nominated — and if I actually had a vote.

I have picks for the other 16 categories, too, but I’m starting to get bored with this myself, so I can only imagine how you feel. I doubt I know what I’m talking about here, but bear in mind that my Super Bowl picks — take the points and the over — came true this year.

The snow tonight was a pretty good reminder that it’s not actually Spring yet — it’s February. With the March issue, Michelle Obama becomes only the second First Lady to grace the cover of Vogue. Speaking of Vogue, L’Uomo Vogue seems to want to be grossing us out with its covers lately. Last month’s issue had arguably the creepiest image to ever appear on the cover of a fashion magazine — A high-contrast black & white photo of a deeply wrinkled Keith Richards holding a lit cigarette butt between his arthritically-gnarled fingers. So how did they follow that this month? An almost identical photo of Mickey Rourke. At least the first joints of his fingers aren’t swollen to the verge of bursting, but still — it’s Mickey Rourke.

I’ve got to stop thinking about those disgusting things because next Tuesday is Pazcki Day! In New Orleans they celebrate Fat Tuesday with parades, booze and public nudity. In Rio De Janeiro they celebrate Fat Tuesday with a wild orgy of dancing in the streets. In Chicago, we Midwesterners celebrate Fat Tuesday by eating jelly doughnuts. Oh, well. Jelly doughnuts are better than nothing. Enjoy!

Valentine’s Day

We’ve heard that some stores haven’t received their shipments of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Well, there’s no shortage of copies at City Newsstand in Chicago and the Chicago-Main Newsstand in Evanston! This year’s edition features 7 countries, 33 models & 83 bikinis! One of those models is racecar driver Danica Patrick.

President Obama flew over City Newsstand Friday afternoon between 5:30 & 6. I’m not sure, but I think he may have waved to us.

We see couples on dates at City Newsstand on most Saturday nights but today being Valentine’s Day I’m guessing we’ll be seeing even more couples than usual. Happy Valentine’s Day to you all!

Super Bowl Sunday

Happy Super Bowl Sunday! I haven’t posted for a whole week because I got some kind of bug and was feeling a little out of it but I’m feeling much better now and to celebrate I’m putting up a Super Post today with lots of extras like an expanded edition of City Newsstand’s HEADLINE WORLD. First things first: I’m taking the points and the over today in the Super Bowl and I think most of you will know just how wrong or right I was by the time you read this — I guarantee that this has been posted before game time.

A sad note: After decades of being the place to find everything from used musical instruments to a good used car, Tradin’ Times has ceased publication, another casualty of the medium you are using right now, the Internet. I bought my first electric piano out of Tradin’ Times when I was 18.

The magazines are catching up with the newspapers very quickly: Time has rushed to the stands a special issue commemorating the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Newsweek has put out a “Special Inauguration Issue” ($5.95) and a “Commemorative Inaugural Edition” ($9.95). In addition, People magazine has devoted its cover this week to a photo of our new President dancing with the new First Lady at on of the balls, both of them looking as happy as two people can be. Life & Style Weekly has a “Special Inauguration Issue” that they claim is a “Collectors Item for only $2.99”. OK! Weekly is a “Special Collector’s Edition” that rejoices, “OH, BAMA! The Celebration of the Century.” The January Washingtonian is a “Special Inauguration Issue” with a beautiful cover portrait of President and Mrs. Obama.

Now that the late Heath Ledger has secured the Oscar nomination so many people wanted for him, the cover story in this week’s Entertainment Weekly is even more interesting. Among the revelations: he turned down the role of Spider-Man and he was relieved that he didn’t win an Oscar for his role in Brokeback Mountain.”

On the day after the historic inauguration of President Barack Obama people are coming into City Newsstand and buying entire bundles of Tribunes and Sun-Times. I don’t know how long they’ll last, but we still have some copies left of both as of this writing.
Speaking of Presidential history, February 12, 2009 marks the 200th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln. Already there are two wonderful magazine specials on the market to commemorate this anniversary. Time — Abraham Lincoln A Bicentennial Celebration is an illustrated history of his life and times. Lincoln — America’s Greatest President at 200 is a special from Smithsonian full of articles about our 16th President by such luminaries as Doris Kearns Goodwin, Christopher Buckley, and Theodore C. Sorensen. Also, the February issue of American History features the cover story, “Lincoln’s Secret of Success” and History the History Channel Magazine gives us the story, “Grave Doings — The plot to steal Lincoln’s body” on their February cover.

The cover of the January issue of Total Film, its 150th issue, features a robot from “Terminator Salvation” whose eyes actually light up and flash red when you press the ‘button’ above the nameplate.

It looks like winter is upon us full force now, so on those rare occasions when you venture our of your warm & snug homes to procure food and other provisions don’t forget to stock up on the reading material as well. A nice little stack of magazines goes a long way toward fighting cabin fever. I sold a copy of Dive Training tonight and was momentarily jealous when I realized that the customer I sold it to will be mentally in the tropics while the rest of us are still dealing with the frosty arctic chill.

The Chicago Tribune will be given away for free on Monday, January 19th only. Why? Because starting that day, the newsstand editions of the daily Chicago Tribune will be printed in tabloid format, like the Sun-Times. The home edition will still be a broadsheet. The content in the two editions will be virtually identical. It is believed that the Trib will be the first paper in America to be printed in both formats at the same time. Judging by some of the responses at the Trib’s website [ www.chicagotribune.com ] a lot of people seem to be very upset about this news for some reason but personally I don’t understand why they didn’t do this years ago.

I was looking at the new Entertainment Weekly today because Johnny Depp as John Dillinger is on the cover. The movie, “Public Enemies”, was shot in and around Chicago last summer. They even shot some of it right around the corner from City Newsstand at the Portage Theater, which benefited nicely from some of the fixing up the production company did. Later in the year, the Portage commemorated the occasion with a 25-cent screening of “Manhattan Melodrama”, the movie Dillinger saw the night he was gunned down by the FBI. They had a “Woman In Red” contest and live theatre organ music. It was a really nice afternoon.
The cover photo of Confederate general Braxton Bragg on the March issue of America’s Civil War had me wondering if Beatle George Harrison was somehow involved in the War Between the States.

With the inauguration just ten days away this may be a good time to remind everybody that City Newsstand has a large section of collectible Barack Obama commemorative magazines, books, calendars, etc. We Chicagoans are very proud of our native son and his accomplishments and very excited that our nation is embarking on a new beginning. Godspeed Mr. President-elect!

I was pleasantly surprised to find today that AMI has resurrected the Weekly World News as both a website — www.weeklyworldnews.com — and as an 8-page insert in the Sun reprinting vintage material ‘from the legendary magazine.’ Now if they would only bring it back as a full-blown periodical we could all go back to being truly informed…

Looking back on 2008, it was a year when City Newsstand celebrated its 30th anniversary… I personally celebrated my 50th birthday by visiting my 50th state… speaking of a 50th state, America elected its first Hawaiian-born President… the lowly Chicago White Sox, who struggled all season long, thrilled us by making it into the post season and actually winning a couple of playoff games while the mighty Chicago Cubs, who looked unbeatable during the season were unable to win a single playoff game… For more looking back at 2008, we recommend:

New Year’s Day

Today starts a new year and and last night we decided to start something new. We’re going to start updating our website at least once a week. You’ll still get all that great magazine info but on a more timely basis. All the latest stuff will be right here on our home page and there will be links to previous posts. Again, I hope to post here at least once a week in 2009. We’ll see how it goes…
Well the Blackhawks took it on the chin 6 to 4 today in Chicago’s first Winter Classic in Wrigley Field. Too bad, but it was fun seeing outdoor hockey and what did we expect — Chicago teams that play in Wrigley Field have a long and glorious history of losing. Let’s just hope that the Hawks aren’t cursed for the rest of the season.

I was reading tonight in American Road about some of the sights along US 50 in Nevada, America’s Loneliest Road. I took a look at a Rand McNally Road Atlas and all of a sudden I’ve got a hankerin’ to take a road trip from Winchester VA to Sacramento, CA, all on US 50. My guess is that it would be a great way to see a whole lot of the Real America.

I hope you all have a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year. See you next week!
